From the album Better Days
As told by Gerry Schultz: This was the first song drummer Joe Battaglia gave me to work with after agreeing to join Granicus in 2015.
I was blown away by it, a powerful rock riff, and hearing it really cinched being in the project for me. When I first was given it, it was 12 minutes of Al Pinell jamming with Joe, which is the basis of Granicus. I rearranged it into workable parts, and then got into lyrics.
I was impressed with the band's previous history, and I was also thinking politically. The early 70s were a great era, and arguably ' better days ' than today in America.
It started out as ' What We Once Knew ', which is still in the lyrics. But my girlfriend suggested Better Days as a better title. Joe agreed, and that's what it became. The rush of doing that song fueled the rest of the entire project, and there was no doubt that it would be the title track of the record.
song lyrics written by Gerry Schultz
V1: You pushed me back behind the door
Now that you’re done with me
I know the feeling, I’ve been here before
Left here ‘til you need me
Oh yeah, when I’m with you
Those few great hours
But now you got someone richer to do
Showing your powers
C: Well, I’m tired of your games
This time we’re through
Your words are charade
Of the love we once we knew
Yeah, of what we once knew
V2: Remember back to golden days
Back when you won with me
Oh yeah, we weren’t afraid
And you knew you needed me
I don’t care what you say
I ain’t gonna wait, No, for you…
These are the days we get to live
And time is running away from me
If there’s something here, I need to know
What’s holding us back from Better Days
